You've preheated the oven, waited fifteen minutes, and put your hand near the rack — nothing. The display says 375°F but the oven is stone cold. Whether you're trying to roast a chicken on a Wednesday night or bake for a family gathering, an oven that won't heat is one of the most disruptive appliance failures a Visalia household can face.
The good news: most oven heating failures are caused by one failed component, and the repair is usually straightforward. Here's how to understand what's wrong, organized by oven type.
Electric Oven Not Heating
Electric ovens rely on one or two resistive heating elements — the bake element on the bottom and the broil element on the top. When either fails, the oven can't reach or maintain temperature. Here's what to look for:
Failed Bake Element
The bake element is the most commonly replaced part in an electric oven repair. When it fails, the oven simply doesn't heat, or heats very slowly and unevenly. A visual inspection sometimes reveals the problem: a failed element may show a visible break, blister, or burn mark. In other cases it looks completely normal despite being electrically open.

Faulty Oven Temperature Sensor
The oven temperature sensor is a probe that sits inside the oven cavity and tells the control board the current temperature. A sensor that's shorted can even cause the oven to overheat.
Sensors can be tested with a multimeter. At room temperature they should read approximately 1,000–1,100 ohms of resistance. A reading far outside that range means replacement is needed. Sensors are an inexpensive part.
Control Board Failure
If the element and sensor both test good, the control board may be failing to send the heating signal. Control board failures are less common than element or sensor failures, but they do happen — especially on machines that have experienced power surges. A board replacement is more expensive, and it's worth having a technician confirm the board is the cause before ordering one.
Gas Oven Not Heating
Gas ovens have a different set of failure points. The most common causes are the igniter and the gas valve.
Weak or Failed Oven Igniter
The igniter in a gas oven does two jobs: it glows hot enough to ignite the gas, and it draws enough current to open the safety gas valve. Over time, igniters weaken — they may still glow, but not draw enough current to open the valve. The result: the oven clicks, the igniter glows orange, but no flame appears.
This is the single most common gas oven repair we perform. A weak igniter is easy to test and inexpensive to replace. In some cases you can tell just by observation: if the igniter glows but takes more than 30–90 seconds to ignite the burner (or never does), it's weak and needs replacement.
Gas Valve Coils
The gas safety valve contains coils (solenoids) that respond to the igniter's current draw. If one or more coils fail, the valve won't open even if the igniter is drawing proper current. Coil failures are less common than igniter failures, but they do occur on older ranges. Testing requires a multimeter and some familiarity with the system — best left to a technician.
Thermostat and Temperature Regulation
Some older gas ranges use a mechanical thermostat rather than an electronic sensor. A failing thermostat can cause the oven to heat erratically, cycle off too early, or not ignite at all. On older Whirlpool, Maytag, and GE ranges especially, this is worth checking if the igniter is functioning correctly.
Both Oven and Broiler Not Working
If neither the bake nor the broil function works on an electric oven, check the breaker first. Electric ranges typically require a 240V circuit with two poles — if one leg trips, you lose either baking or broiling but not always both. If both are out, you may have lost both legs, or there's an issue with the control board or the terminal block where the power cord connects to the range.
A failed terminal block is a surprisingly common cause of complete oven failure on electric ranges. The terminal can arc and burn over time, cutting power to the heating elements. This is a safety issue that requires immediate attention — a technician should inspect and replace the terminal block before the range is used again.
Oven Heats but Runs at the Wrong Temperature
If your oven heats but food consistently comes out undercooked or overcooked, the temperature sensor or thermostat calibration may be off. Many ovens allow you to calibrate the temperature in the settings menu — check your owner's manual. If calibration doesn't resolve it, the sensor likely needs replacement.
Getting the Right Diagnosis
The overlap between symptoms can make oven diagnosis tricky. A bake element failure, a sensor failure, and a control board issue can all look identical from a user's perspective.
