Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry Clothes

A load that should be dry in 45 minutes is still damp after an hour and fifteen. You run it again. Still damp. By the third cycle you've spent three hours and more electricity than you'd like to think about, and your clothes still aren't fully dry. A slow dryer is one of the most common appliance complaints we hear from Visalia homeowners — and it's also one of the most misunderstood, because several different problems can look identical from the outside.

Here's a systematic breakdown of the causes, starting with the ones you can check yourself.

The Exhaust Vent: The Number One Cause

A blocked or restricted exhaust duct is responsible for more slow-dryer calls than any other cause — by a wide margin. Here's why: the dryer heats air, tumbles it through wet clothes, and then pushes that humid air out through the exhaust duct to the outside of your home. If the duct is clogged with lint, kinked, too long, or improperly terminated, that humid air has nowhere to go. The dryer keeps tumbling and heating, but moisture has no escape path, so clothes stay damp.

Signs of a blocked vent beyond slow drying: clothes feel unusually hot at the end of a cycle, the laundry room itself feels humid or warm while the dryer runs, or the dryer shuts off early (a thermal overload protection tripping due to overheating).

Check the exterior vent flap while the dryer is running — you should feel a strong airflow. If it's weak or absent, the duct is restricted. Lint accumulates in the duct over years of use and should be professionally cleaned every one to two years, especially for runs longer than ten feet or those with multiple bends. This is also a fire safety issue — lint buildup in dryer ducts is a leading cause of home fires.

Clogged Lint Trap

The lint screen should be cleared after every single load. A partially clogged lint screen reduces airflow enough to noticeably increase drying time, and a fully clogged one can trigger the thermal overload cutout. Beyond clearing the screen itself, the lint trap housing below it can accumulate lint over time — a long, flexible brush designed for dryer lint traps can reach in and clear this buildup. Clean the housing once a month.

Heating Element (Electric Dryers)

If airflow is confirmed good but the dryer still takes too long, the heating element may be partially failing. A heating element that has developed a partial break can still glow and produce some heat — enough that the dryer isn't stone cold, but not enough to dry clothes efficiently in a normal cycle time.

You can confirm this with a multimeter: a good element will show continuity across its terminals. A partial break may show continuity inconsistently depending on temperature and drum position. Thermal Fuse (Electric and Gas Dryers)

The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows if the dryer overheats. When it blows completely, the dryer either won't start or won't heat at all. But there's a lesser-known scenario: if the thermal limiter — a similar but resettable device on some models — is weakened, it can intermittently interrupt the heating circuit, causing inconsistent heat and long drying times.

If your dryer recently started taking longer after a period where the exhaust was clogged (causing overheating), a partially compromised thermal device is a likely cause. The fuse is inexpensive, but the root cause — the blocked vent that caused the overheating — must be addressed at the same time or the fuse will blow again immediately.

Gas Igniter and Valve (Gas Dryers)

Gas dryers ignite the burner at the start of a cycle and re-ignite periodically throughout to maintain temperature. If the igniter is weakening — still functional enough to light the burner initially but not reliably — the burner may cycle off and not re-ignite, leaving the dryer tumbling clothes in cooling air for much of the cycle.

A symptom of this: the dryer heats initially, clothes feel warm for the first 20 minutes, but they come out cool and damp at the end of the cycle. This points directly to a weak igniter that lights the first cycle but can't reliably re-ignite the burner throughout. It's a straightforward and inexpensive repair.

Moisture Sensor Strips

Modern dryers use two metal sensor strips inside the drum to detect moisture level in the clothes. When clothes touch both strips simultaneously, the circuit closes and the dryer knows there's still moisture present. When clothes are dry, contact is intermittent and the dryer interprets this as "done."

Over time, fabric softener residue and mineral deposits (especially from dryer sheets in hard water areas like Visalia) coat the sensor strips, reducing their conductivity. The dryer then misreads dry clothes as wet and keeps running — or worse, misreads wet clothes as dry and shuts off too soon. Cleaning the strips with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol is a free fix worth trying before anything else. Find the two narrow metal bars inside the drum, usually near the lint trap opening.

Drum Seals

The front and rear drum seals prevent heated air from leaking around the drum and bypassing the clothes. When these seals wear out — they're typically felt or plastic strips — heated air escapes without passing through the load, reducing drying efficiency. You may hear a scraping or squealing sound if the seal is in contact with the drum housing. Seal replacement requires partial disassembly of the dryer cabinet and is a job for a technician.

Load Size

Before calling for service, make sure you're not overloading the dryer. A drum that's packed too full doesn't allow clothes to tumble freely, so heated air can't reach all surfaces. The rule of thumb: fill the drum about three-quarters full for a normal load. Very heavy items like denim jeans and towels take longer by nature — mix them with lighter items rather than drying an entire load of heavy fabrics at once.

When to Call a Technician

Clean the lint trap and check the exhaust vent first — those are free and address the majority of slow-dryer cases. If airflow is good and the dryer still takes too long, the heating element, igniter, or moisture sensors are the next suspects. A technician can test these components in a single visit and complete most repairs the same day.
